Case Study of Anaerobic Digestion Process Stability Detected by Dissolved Hydrogen Concentration

The paper presents the results of a laboratory experiment mesophilic single-stage anaerobic digestion performed to verify possibility early detection process instability and reactor overload by evaluating course dissolved hydrogen concentration main intermediate. was run in Terrafors IS rotary drum bioreactor for 230 days. substrate dosed on weekdays food leftovers from university canteen. At an average temperature 37 °C, organic loading volatiles 0.858 kg m−3 day−1 theoretical retention time 259 days, biogas production 0.617 Nm3 VS−1 achieved with CH4 content 51.7 vol. %. values established FOS/TAC stability indicator ranged 0.26 11.4. highest value reached when overloaded. measured amperometric microsensor 0.039–0.425 mg dm−3. Data were statistically processed using Pearson’s correlation coefficient. other parameters such as acids evaluated. coefficient 0.331 corresponded p-value 0. confirmed very low limit at which microbial culture, especially methanogens, already proved be rather unsuitable operational applications due insufficient sensitivity short service life. newly designed ratio neutralizing capacity tested but did not work significantly better than indicator.
